The Bush administration has made a secret proposal to the UN to eliminate ad hoc leap seconds that keep standard time (Coordinated Universal Time) in sync with the Earth's rotation--a move favored by business interests and opposed by scientists, especially astronomers.

In place of leap seconds, the US proposal would introduce a leap hour every 500--600 years.

Admittedly, this isn't the biggest issue with the administration, except for the fact that it demonstrates once again a pattern of putting business interests ahead of science, and using secrecy to force their will on the world.
